Helping beyond the move.
A real estate broker called me about a house they were preparing to sell in a nearby town. The woman living there was being evicted and needed help packing and moving.
When I arrived, she was lying on the sofa and explained that she had back problems. After introducing myself, I asked if it would be okay for me to walk through her home to get an idea of what we’d be packing. It didn’t take long to see that her belongings were sparse.
She had been sleeping on the sofa, the same one she was lying on when I arrived. I noticed a stack of towels bunched up at one end of the couch and gently asked, “What’s under the towels?”
She hesitated for a moment before letting me check. When I pulled back the towels, I saw a gaping hole in the cushion. She had stuffed the towels in to keep herself from sinking into the couch. My heart sank.
We packed up her few belongings, but I couldn’t leave it at that. I reached out to a local donation site and was able to secure a clean sofa, a mattress and box spring, and even a dresser for her.
This story still stays with me. I hope she’s doing well and that the small kindness we were able to offer made a difference.
