Letting Go of Sentimental Items That are Creating Clutter

Are there objects in your house that you keep because you feel like it is a way of holding on to memories? It is great to hold onto these memories but it can also create a lot of clutter in your physical space. It is important to remember that you can hold onto the memories without holding on to the clutter of all the objects.

Do you feel like it is going to erase the memories if you get rid of the object?

Is the object stored in the back of a closet or in a basement or attic? If that is the case, then it is a sign that you can hold onto the memories without keeping the clutter.

Here is a list of some objects that could be creating clutter in your life:

  • Photos and Videos: This could be stored in albums, shoe boxes, or even digitally on your computer or thumb drive.
  • Clothing: This could be clothing that no longer fits. This could also be a present from old friends, family or significant others.
  • Teddy Bears: You might be holding on to stuffed animals that significant others gave you or from your childhood. You can always pass these on to a young family member or donate it.
  • Love Letters: I know it may be hard to let go of these. But once you are done with that relationship, it is time to let go of these papers.

With all these items and many other things, you can always take a picture of them so you have a permanent memory of the object without taking up space and creating clutter.
